By Darin Sewell

Many times new marine aquarium keepers often make some common mistakes when setting up a saltwater fish aquarium for beginners. These small mistakes can often lead to larger problems down the road but are easily avoidable as you will read below.

Going To Fast- Take some time to learn about the various saltwater fish that are available and what ones peak your interest. Once you have a list of fish do a little more research and eliminate any fish from our list that get to large for your size aquarium or that are to difficult to keep in captivity. Knowing what fish you want will also help you better chose your tank and support equipment

Avoid Small Tanks- A very common mistake made is buying a tank that is to small. A small tank will not have the temperature and chemical stability that a larger tank does. A tank that is less stable can be stressful on your marine fish and constant swings can cause them to get sick and possibly die. To avoid this stick with a tank in the 30-90 gallon range.

Do Not Overfeed- Overfeeding s common in new saltwater fish aquarium for beginner setups. It is also the fastest way to have an algae problem. To avoid the problems associated with overfeeding your saltwater tank spread your feeding out to two or three a day and shut off all pumps and filters until the food is eaten.

To Many Fish- An overstocked saltwater tank is a recipe for disaster. Not only will the system be overloaded and algae growth unavoidable but the fish will more then likely fight for the limited space and end up killing one another. Overstocking also brings other problems like low PH and increased chance of disease spreading through the marine aquarium.
